If you veer sharply off the Hasbro path you will find, like I did recently, that there are some really awesome family board games that don't suck.  Check out BoardGameGeek for a selection of really awesome games that will keep you amused for many, many hours.  My current favorites are Puerto Rico and Settlers of Catan with the Seafarers expansion.
